What a fragrance wardrobe actually is.

For a long time the question "what's your signature scent?" was the only question worth asking. One bottle. One identity. The cologne your father wore.

That worked when you owned one bottle because you owned one bottle. It doesn't work anymore — partly because there's an embarrassment of good perfume now, and partly because most of us aren't one thing all day.

A wardrobe is the small, considered set of bottles you actually reach for. Three to ten. Not a collection — collectors hoard. A wardrobe is for using. Each bottle has a job: the one you wear to your in-laws, the one you wear when you want to feel like yourself again, the one that smells like a memory.

The shape of a good wardrobe

The bottles don't have to be related. They have to cover your year.

• Something for the cold months that has a low heart-rate. Resin, smoke, suede.
• Something for spring that startles you in a good way. Green, peppery, something with juice in it.
• A summer that doesn't try too hard. Citrus, neroli, salt — not "ozonic."
• A late-night, indoor-only thing that you don't apologize for. Tuberose, oud, a fragrance that takes up space.

Four bottles. Years of use. That's a wardrobe.

What it isn't

It isn't a hoard. It isn't a backup-bottle drawer. It isn't every blind buy you regretted but kept because it cost something. Those things are real but they're not your wardrobe — they're your archive.

The point of a wardrobe is that you reach for it without thinking. If you can't tell me what your "winter weeknight" bottle is, you don't have a wardrobe yet — you have a shelf.

How to start one

If you're new: pick three. One safe one, one beautiful one, one that scares you a little. Wear them on rotation for a month and pay attention to which one you reach for when you're tired and which one you reach for when you're excited. The answer to those two questions is the spine of your wardrobe.
