By the editors · 2 min readOverture Man opens with a full-orchestra entry: ginger, cumin, saffron, grapefruit, cardamom, and nutmeg simultaneously — a spice-citrus blend that is dense and warm from the first moment. Cumin gives the opening a slightly animalic, skin-adjacent quality that Amouage uses without apology. Grapefruit lifts the whole accord, preventing it from becoming heavy.
The heart doubles down: cinnamon, myrrh, labdanum, benzoin, and patchouli form one of the richest resinous-oriental hearts in the contemporary Amouage catalog. Myrrh's slightly bitter medicinal quality and labdanum's animalic warmth are the defining materials.
Sandalwood, incense, leather, frankincense, smoke, and clary sage resolve the resinous heart into something both drier and more expansive. Smoke and clary sage add herbal-woody lightness that saves the composition from opacity. Genuinely complex.
