By the editors · 2 min readThe name is unambiguous and the fragrance honors it: patchouli is the structural element from which everything else builds outward. The thyme in the heart introduces an unexpected herbal dimension — slightly medicinal, slightly green — that prevents the patchouli from sitting in its comfortable earthiness unchallenged. Cedar sharpens the opening, giving the woody-herbal combination a dry, slightly austere quality.
What makes Real Patchouly work is the tobacco in the base. It adds a leathery, slightly fermented darkness that aligns with the earthier registers of patchouli without simply doubling them. Amber and vanilla warm the drydown, but this is not a gourmand interpretation — the sweetness is muted, pushed to the background by herbaceous and earthy notes that remain persistent throughout.
This is for those who prefer their patchouli honest and present. Best worn in cooler weather, particularly by those comfortable with something genuinely earthy.
