By the editors · 2 min readA rose draped in smoke and spice, anchored by a deep, resinous oud that gives the composition uncommon weight for the house. The opening is stark—dry damask petals touched with clove, nothing dewy or garden-fresh about it. As it settles, the oud emerges not as a screaming statement but as a shadowed backdrop, woody and slightly medicinal, holding the rose in a kind of austere embrace.
This is Jo Malone's attempt at something darker, more sultry than their typical bright colognes, and it succeeds in creating an almost Gothic elegance. The velvet in the name is apt—there's a plush, enveloping quality, though it remains polished rather than animalic.
Best suited to those who want rose without sweetness, oud without aggression, and a fragrance that reads as serious without tipping into severity.
