By the editors · 2 min readIllusions Noires Le Premier Parfum is the original 1997 in mourning dress. Iris and myrrh open dry, smoky, almost ecclesiastical — the cherry-violet brightness of the parent has been wiped away and replaced with something silver-gray and resinous.
Licorice still sits at the heart, but it's the bitter Sambucca version rather than the candy. Jasmine sambac is added more for shadow than perfume — a damp white floral inside a stone room. The composition reads less like an extension of the original and more like a black-mass remix of it.
Benzoin and vanilla in the base sweeten the smoke just enough to keep it wearable. A 2012 limited edition that's quieter and more gothic than its source. Best in cold weather, after dark.
