By the editors · 2 min readThe original Mauboussin opens with a flash of bergamot that quickly gives way to a creamy ylang-ylang heart—indolic and slightly narcotic, somewhere between white flowers and overripe fruit. This is ylang presented with minimal interference, its banana-custard facets allowed to bloom fully before sinking into a resinous base.

That foundation is where the fragrance settles for the long haul: sandalwood and cedar provide woody structure while benzoin, amber, and vanilla create a sweet, balsamic warmth. Patchouli adds a subtle earthiness that prevents the composition from becoming too dessert-like, though it remains firmly in gourmand-oriental territory.

This is unapologetically rich and enveloping, the kind of scent that announces itself in elevators. It wears best in cooler weather and suits those comfortable with vintage-style orientals that prioritize warmth and projection over restraint.
