2 Note
Two notes. No filler.
2 Note was founded in 2006 by Carolyn Mix and Darcy Doniger, opening their first shop on Wharf Street in Portland's Old Port before relocating in 2014 to a studio and retail space in Hudson, New York. The house's founding philosophy is embedded in its name: fragrances built from two primary natural materials, allowing the interaction and dialogue between those elements to provide all the interest and complexity. Essential oils, resins, woods, leaves, and flowers serve as building blocks; the restraint of the two-note constraint is the methodology, not a limitation. This approach predates by years the broader niche conversation about minimalism and constraint-based composition, giving 2 Note a genuine claim to intellectual priority in that conversation. The house expanded into botanical skincare and body oils while maintaining fragrance as its creative center. Based in Hudson's arts-connected community, 2 Note distributes through independent specialty retailers and its own retail presence, attracting customers who appreciate the natural materials commitment and the discipline of intentional simplicity.
