4711
The original Eau de Cologne, since 1792.
4711 is one of the oldest fragrance brands in the world, its name derived from the address of its original Cologne shop — Glockengasse 4711. Founded in the late eighteenth century, the original Eau de Cologne formulated there — a light blend of citrus, neroli, lavender, and rosemary — became so synonymous with the city that Cologne itself became the generic term for this category of fragrance. Napoleon Bonaparte is said to have been a devoted user. The brand has changed ownership multiple times and is now part of the Mäurer & Wirtz portfolio. Despite its commercialization, the classic Echt Kölnisch Wasser formulation remains a benchmark for the light citrus-aromatic style and occupies an important place in perfumery history.
DNA over time
Each column is an era. Each colored band shows that family’s share of accord weight across every perfume the house released in that window. Bigger band = the house leaned harder on that family.
