Agent Provocateur
British lingerie boudoir, in scent.
Agent Provocateur is a British lingerie house founded in London in 1994 by Joseph Corré and Serena Rees. Its first eponymous fragrance arrived in 2000 and quickly became a fixture of late-1990s and early-2000s perfumery: a saffron, rose, and magnolia chypre with a knowing, slightly subversive edge that mirrored the brand's lingerie aesthetic. Subsequent releases extended into more conventional florals and oriental territory. Ownership of the parent company has changed several times, passing to private equity firm 3i in 2007 and through subsequent restructurings. The fragrance licence has likewise moved between operators, and new perfume launches have slowed considerably in recent years. The original Agent Provocateur eau de parfum nevertheless remains a reference point for that particular vein of British boudoir perfumery — confident, slightly archaic, unmistakably of its moment.
