Alfred Sung
Modern, timeless beauty from Canada's enduring designer.
Alfred Sung is a Canadian fashion and fragrance label tied to the designer of the same name — born in Shanghai in 1948, raised in Hong Kong, and since the 1970s based in Toronto, where Maclean's once called him Canada's "king of fashion." His clothing line emphasises clean lines, neutral palettes and considered tailoring rather than trend-chasing. The perfumery line launched in 1986 with Sung Alfred Sung, a green floral developed in Paris by Givaudan and distributed in Canada by Riviera Concepts, then a division of the Eaton's department store group. The fragrance sold through what was meant to be two years of stock in four months, and the line expanded with Pure (1993), Forever (1995), Shi (2001) and others. Riviera ran the business until 2006, when Elizabeth Arden acquired its prestige fragrance brands. Alfred Sung suits a wearer who finds nineties soft-floral and aldehydic codes more comfortable than the current sweet-and-loud register.
DNA over time
Each column is an era. Each colored band shows that family’s share of accord weight across every perfume the house released in that window. Bigger band = the house leaned harder on that family.
