Barrister And Mann
Fragrance-first shaving house from upstate New York.
Barrister and Mann was founded on 18 March 2013 in Boston, Massachusetts, by William Carius, a self-taught perfumer who began wet shaving because his sensitive skin made modern cartridge razors unbearable. The house's name reflects its origin: Carius was in law school when he started the company — a barrister is a type of British lawyer — and the 'Mann' anchored an initial focus on men's grooming. From a Boston apartment the brand has grown into one of wet shaving's most respected artisan operations, now manufacturing all of its products by hand in small batches in upstate New York using responsibly sourced and cruelty-free ingredients. What distinguishes Barrister and Mann within the wet-shaving world is the seriousness of its perfumery: Carius constructs multi-layered fragrances anchored in classic fougère, chypre, and oriental structures, pairing original scent compositions with cutting-edge soap bases such as Omnibus that are themselves prized for their performance. The house carries an extensive catalogue of seasonal and limited editions, and its releases frequently sell out quickly — testament to a community that prizes both the shave and the smell in equal measure.
DNA over time
Each column is an era. Each colored band shows that family’s share of accord weight across every perfume the house released in that window. Bigger band = the house leaned harder on that family.
