Bath & Body Works
Transforming the ordinary through the power of fragrance
Bath & Body Works opened its first store in New Albany, Ohio in 1990 as a division of Limited Brands, founded by retail executive Les Wexner. Its original concept — affordable personal care with naturally-derived ingredients and seasonal storytelling — resonated quickly. The brand built a loyal customer base through semi-annual sales, limited-edition collections, and fragrance rotations tied to holidays and seasons, creating a sense of perpetual novelty. Fragrances are formulated externally by a rotating roster of perfumers and tend toward accessible simplicity: pyramids are typically three to five notes, compositions are cheerful and approachable, and projection is calibrated for everyday wear. The catalog spans body sprays, mists, and EDTs, with legacy entries like Warm Vanilla Sugar and Cucumber Melon carrying decades of brand memory. Bath & Body Works, Inc. became an independent public company in 2021 following its separation from L Brands.
DNA over time
Each column is an era. Each colored band shows that family’s share of accord weight across every perfume the house released in that window. Bigger band = the house leaned harder on that family.
