Bath House
British apothecary fragrance from the Lake District.
Bath House was founded in 1997 by a small group of artists and designers — Abigail, Nigel, Pauline, Glyn, and Gareth — who had become friends through a shared love of art, British landscape, and natural materials, and settled together in the Lake District. From the beginning, the brand made fragrance and natural skincare in the artisanal tradition, guided by the same attention to craft and place that characterized the collaborative group's broader design practice. In 2007 the team shifted to producing their products themselves in small batches at their own making rooms in Cumbria, allowing tighter control over the freshness of natural extracts, plant oils, and butters. The move reinforced Bath House's identity as a genuinely handmade British brand, distinct from larger competitors who invoke rural heritage as marketing rather than operational reality. The Lake District setting is not incidental — the landscape, with its particular light, damp air, and botanical richness, is a consistent reference point in the house's naming and olfactory imagination. Bath House operates retail stores in the Lake District and distributes through specialty gift and lifestyle retailers across the United Kingdom. It sits comfortably in the accessible tier: serious quality with honest pricing.
