Blackbird
A playfully imperfect experiment in design and scent.
Blackbird began in 2004 as a progressive menswear store in Seattle's Ballard neighbourhood, founded by Nicole Miller (no relation to the New York designer of the same name). The shop became known for early-aughts independent labels and gradually spun out a fragrance and home-scent line that took on a life of its own. By the late 2010s Blackbird had reorganised around perfume and incense, with Miller as creative director composing or collaborating on each release. The compositions tend toward moody, materials-forward work: smoky woods, leather, frankincense, tar, and the grey Pacific Northwest weather encoded as scent. Triton, Vulpecula, Stratus, and the long-running Pleasure Coast line are among the better-known entries. Blackbird closed its physical menswear store in Seattle in 2022 to focus on the fragrance house, which is now sold through independent perfumeries and the brand's own site as an art-perfumery project rather than a fashion adjunct.

DNA over time
Each column is an era. Each colored band shows that family’s share of accord weight across every perfume the house released in that window. Bigger band = the house leaned harder on that family.
