Clandestine Laboratories
Underground fragrance.
Clandestine Laboratories is a Brooklyn-based indie perfumery founded by self-taught perfumer Mark Sage, who began his accidental obsession with fragrance in January 2010. Sage came to scent not through the industry but through the internet — reading descriptions and reviews obsessively until the desire to make his own overcame any other ambition. A background in science and a practice in photography informed an approach that is simultaneously rigorous and anti-fashion: all fragrances are blended by hand in small batches, with no concession to trend or commercial expectation. The brand operates with deliberate obscurity. Its website has carried the tagline 'You'll never find us,' and for much of its early existence Sage preferred to remain anonymous, though that anonymity has since eroded as Clandestine's work has attracted critical attention. The catalogue spans a range of genres — smoky chypres, animalic florals, desiccated woods — unified by a commitment to material quality and what Sage calls an 'insanely wearable' usability that belies the compositions' complexity. Clandestine Laboratories sits in the niche tier, with individual fragrances typically retailing between $100 and $175. Distribution is primarily direct-to-consumer through the brand's own site, with select placement through specialist American niche retailers.

Each column is an era. Each colored band shows that family’s share of accord weight across every perfume the house released in that window. Bigger band = the house leaned harder on that family.
