Detaille 1905 Paris
Belle Epoque Paris perfumery still operating from rue Saint-Lazare.
Detaille 1905 Paris was founded in 1905 by the Comtesse de Presle, an aristocrat with a passion for motor sport who was among the first French women to drive an automobile. Troubled by the drying effects of wind and dust on her skin, she commissioned her friend the chemist Marcellin Berthelot to formulate a protective treatment, and the resulting Baume Automobile became the cornerstone of a beauty house she established at 10 rue Saint-Lazare in the ninth arrondissement of Paris. The Maison Detaille quickly attracted a devoted clientele drawn from the highest ranks of European society — the order books include the Queen of Bulgaria, the Queen of Belgium, maharajahs, and prominent figures from literature, industry, and entertainment. More than a century later, the house continues to operate from the same address, offering its range of perfumes, skincare preparations, and beauty treatments to visitors from around the world. Detaille represents one of the rare continuously operating Belle Epoque perfumery addresses still welcoming clients in the city where it was founded.
