Dorothy Gray
American women's beauty heritage since 1916.
Dorothy Gray was established in 1916 by Dorothy Cloudman Gray, a pioneering American beauty entrepreneur who built one of the first nationally distributed prestige cosmetics and fragrance lines in the United States. Gray opened her first salon on Fifth Avenue in New York, positioning herself alongside Helena Rubinstein and Elizabeth Arden as a leader of the new American beauty industry. The brand developed fragrances, face creams, and color cosmetics that were considered sophisticated choices for the 1920s and 1930s American consumer. Distribution expanded through department stores and mail order, reaching consumers far outside New York. The Dorothy Gray name was eventually acquired by other corporate owners as the independent beauty industry consolidated through the mid-twentieth century. The house is no longer in independent operation, but its catalog and history represent an important chapter in American women's entrepreneurship and the commercialization of personal beauty.
