DSH Perfumes
Artisan perfumery where fine art principles meet olfaction.
DSH Perfumes was founded in Boulder, Colorado in 1999 by Dawn Spencer Hurwitz, a trained perfumer who built one of America's most rigorous independent fragrance studios from her own formulation practice. Hurwitz trained formally in perfumery and creates all compositions herself, drawing equally from natural materials and synthetic aroma chemicals in formulas that range from wearable to deliberately challenging. The catalog is wide — over three hundred fragrances — and includes traditional fine fragrance formats alongside solid perfumes, attars, and artist-edition pieces. Recurring themes include natural landscape, literary references, and music theory; Hurwitz has published on the intersections between fragrance and other sensory disciplines. Prices sit at the lower end of artisan niche: accessible compared to European luxury houses, while maintaining a high level of compositional intent and transparency. DSH is a reference for serious fragrance collectors who track independent American perfumery and want work that shows its thinking — compositions that can be discussed as much as worn.

Each column is an era. Each colored band shows that family’s share of accord weight across every perfume the house released in that window. Bigger band = the house leaned harder on that family.
