English Laundry
Manchester-by-way-of-California designer fragrance.
English Laundry is a Manchester-flavoured Anglophile lifestyle brand built in California by designer Christopher Wicks. The apparel line launched in 2009 in American department stores, and the fragrance arm followed in 2010 with Arrogant, a men's eau de toilette positioned as an everyday smart-casual scent. The catalogue has since grown to over twenty SKUs across men's and women's, distributed primarily through TJ Maxx, Marshalls, Macy's, and similar mid-tier US retail channels. Wicks's reference points are drawn from his Manchester childhood: Mod-era tailoring, Northern Soul, Britpop, and rainy-city fougère cliches, all interpreted through American mall-fragrance economics. Compositions are competent and inoffensive, leaning on the Acqua di Giò and Bleu de Chanel template rather than trying anything unusual. The house is a clean example of mid-2000s celebrity-adjacent designer perfumery, priced for gifting rather than collecting.
DNA over time
Each column is an era. Each colored band shows that family’s share of accord weight across every perfume the house released in that window. Bigger band = the house leaned harder on that family.
