House of Matriarch
Nature is the ultimate luxury
House of Matriarch was founded in Seattle in 2007 by Christi Meshell, a self-taught American perfumer who had begun mixing fragrances at home using natural raw materials sourced from small distillers. The house works almost entirely with botanical absolutes, attars, and tinctures, avoiding most common synthetics, and bottles its fragrances by hand at a small studio and tasting room in the Pioneer Square neighbourhood of Seattle. The catalogue is split across pillars — Sacred, Forbidden, Black No. 1 — that explore resins, oud, animalics, and dark florals at high concentration. Releases are unhurried; some compositions are produced in batches of a few hundred bottles and then retired or rotated. The brand has built a steady following among American natural-perfume enthusiasts and has been recognised at the Art and Olfaction Awards. Distribution is direct from the studio, with limited stockists in independent niche perfumeries.
DNA over time
Each column is an era. Each colored band shows that family’s share of accord weight across every perfume the house released in that window. Bigger band = the house leaned harder on that family.
