IFF International Flavors & Fragrances
IFF, International Flavors & Fragrances, operates as one of the world's largest ingredient and composition suppliers to the global fragrance industry, functioning primarily as a B2B entity rather than a consumer-facing house. Founded in 1958 through the merger of Polak & Schwarz and van Ameringen-Haebler, the company develops raw aromatic materials, accords, and complete fragrance compositions that major brands license and bring to market under their own names. IFF's research and development infrastructure spans dozens of countries and employs many of the industry's most accomplished perfumers—Carlos Benaïm, Dominique Ropion, Anne Flipo, and Loc Dong among them. The company's acquisition of Frutarom in 2018 and the Nutrition & Biosciences division of DuPont in 2021 expanded its reach substantially beyond fragrance into food flavors and microbiome science. IFF's influence on the modern fragrance landscape is enormous and largely invisible to consumers—the materials and formulas that give recognizable shapes to some of the world's best-selling fragrances originate in IFF's laboratories.
DNA over time
Each column is an era. Each colored band shows that family’s share of accord weight across every perfume the house released in that window. Bigger band = the house leaned harder on that family.
