Roads
A Dublin lifestyle brand built around scent, books and film.
Roads was founded in Dublin in 2013 by Danielle Ryan, who arrived at perfumery via an unlikely route: a drama degree from London's Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and a career in theatre production, where she had begun experimenting with scent as a tool for creating atmospheric presence on stage. Born to an Irish father and a Sri Lankan-German mother, and raised between Ireland, Sri Lanka, Nigeria, and London, Ryan brought a genuinely polyglot sensibility to the brand from its inception. The fragrances are unisex by conviction and collaborative by method: each composition is developed with an external perfumer working from a detailed emotional brief rather than a genre specification, and the resulting catalogue — which has grown to include scents like Afropolis, Harmattan, and Bitter End — is as geographically varied as its founder. Candles and accessories complement the fragrance line, giving the brand the character of a considered lifestyle object rather than a pure perfumery. Roads distributes through specialist niche retailers in Europe and North America, and its positioning sits squarely in the mid-to-upper niche bracket — well-crafted, conceptually grounded, and priced to reflect the quality of its ingredients and the deliberateness of its creative process.
