Scents The City xun wei de tu
Urban scent narratives from Shanghai.
Scents The City, known in Mandarin as Xun Wei De Tu (寻味地图, meaning Map of Flavour), was founded in Shanghai around 2014 as part of China's first wave of domestic niche fragrance. The house treats each fragrance as an olfactory postcard from a specific urban neighbourhood or cultural moment, translating the layered sensory experience of contemporary city life into wearable compositions. Working within a niche positioning unusual for Chinese fragrance at the time, the brand helped establish a template for homegrown artisanal perfumery in a market previously dominated by European imports. Their releases typically combine international raw materials with references to distinctly local contexts — street food, park pavilions, the humidity of a Shanghai summer — giving the collection a cultural specificity difficult to replicate. The house occupies a meaningful position in the history of Chinese niche perfumery as an early creator catering to a domestic audience seeking something beyond prestige department-store offerings.

DNA over time
Each column is an era. Each colored band shows that family’s share of accord weight across every perfume the house released in that window. Bigger band = the house leaned harder on that family.
