Sean John
Sean Combs' hip-hop lifestyle brand, fragrance since 2006.
Sean John was founded in 1998 by Sean Combs as the fashion arm of his broader cultural enterprise, and by the mid-2000s had extended into fragrance with the backing of Estée Lauder's distribution infrastructure. The house's debut scent launched in 2006, and subsequent releases were signed by a roster of respected perfumers including Calice Becker, Harry Fremont, Ilias Ermenidis, and Aurélien Guichard — giving the line considerably more craft than its celebrity-brand origins might suggest. Ownership passed to brand management agency CAA-GBG in 2016, but when Global Brands Group filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in July 2021, Combs repurchased the Sean John name for 7.5 million dollars in December of that year, restoring independent ownership to the brand he had built. The fragrance catalogue reflects the brand's hip-hop-to-luxury trajectory: bold, confident oriental-woody compositions and vibrant fresh colognes aimed at an urban American audience. Unforgivable, the flagship masculine, became one of the best-selling celebrity fragrances of the 2000s and remains the house's most recognised olfactory statement.
DNA over time
Each column is an era. Each colored band shows that family’s share of accord weight across every perfume the house released in that window. Bigger band = the house leaned harder on that family.
