The Perfumist
The oldest family perfume house in the world, opened to the public.
The Perfumist is an Istanbul-based fragrance house whose family claims continuous operation over more than three centuries, with documented letters from Sultan Mehmed V in the early 1900s recognising their forebear as Perfumist to the Ottoman court. Founded by the great-grandfather of the current master perfumist and owner, Mr. Ali, the house served royalty and nobility exclusively before opening to the public in 2018. The brand specialises in luxury attar perfumes and essential oils crafted from natural, pure materials using traditional methods passed down through generations — positioning itself as 100 per cent natural, cruelty-free, and produced in strictly limited quantities. Fragrances are deliberately scarce, rarely promoted, and frequently out of stock; this cultivated rarity has built one of the most loyal followings in the niche world. Many experts and historians regard The Perfumist as the oldest continuously operating family-owned perfume house in existence, a claim the house supports with archival evidence from the Ottoman period.

Each column is an era. Each colored band shows that family’s share of accord weight across every perfume the house released in that window. Bigger band = the house leaned harder on that family.
