Tru Fragrances
Tru Fragrance was founded in 1969 as Romane Fragrances by Bernie Dworin, a travelling menswear salesman who began carrying perfumes for the small clothiers on his route. The company grew slowly through the 1970s and 1980s as a private-label supplier to specialty stores and was renamed Tru Fragrance after its purchase by Monte Henige in 2004. Now headquartered in Willowbrook, Illinois, with a design studio in New York, the company runs as a brand-builder rather than a single-name house. Its portfolio spans owned labels — Pinrose, Undone Beauty, ban.do — and licensed celebrity and lifestyle launches, with formulas developed in partnership with the major fragrance houses. Distribution is concentrated in US department stores, Ulta and Anthropologie, and the price band sits firmly in the accessible mass-market range. Fragrance is the core business; cosmetics and bath have been added as adjacent categories.
DNA over time
Each column is an era. Each colored band shows that family’s share of accord weight across every perfume the house released in that window. Bigger band = the house leaned harder on that family.
