What We Do Is Secret / A Lab on Fire
Master perfumers given a free brief, in small editions.
A Lab on Fire — also marketed as What We Do Is Secret — is a niche fragrance project founded in 2009 by Brazilian-born creative director Carlos Kusubayashi, who grew up in Japan and later established the brand between Paris and New York. The house's founding premise is deliberately open: rather than imposing a signature aesthetic, Kusubayashi commissions the world's most respected perfumers — including Dominique Ropion, Nathalie Lorson, and Pierre Bourdon — and gives each a free brief, resulting in a catalogue of small-edition releases that are as stylistically diverse as their creators. The finished fragrances are bottled in understated packaging that lets the compositions speak for themselves. Released in limited quantities and distributed through specialist niche retailers, the line has attracted a devoted following among fragrance enthusiasts who appreciate the rare opportunity to experience master perfumers working unconstrained by commercial convention.
DNA over time
Each column is an era. Each colored band shows that family’s share of accord weight across every perfume the house released in that window. Bigger band = the house leaned harder on that family.
