Agonist
Swedish house celebrated for sculptural handcrafted Kosta Boda glass flacons.
Agonist was founded in Sweden in 2008 by Christine and Niclas Lydeen—she a fashion-trained designer with French roots who had studied at Studio Bercot in Paris, he an art director and visual artist. Their combined sensibilities produced a house where the object holding the fragrance is treated with as much seriousness as the liquid inside: AGONIST commissioned collaborations with award-winning glass artist Åsa Jungnelius and the internationally renowned Kosta Boda glassworks, resulting in hand-blown sculptural flacons that function simultaneously as studio objects and vessels for perfume. The first sculpture was produced in a limited edition of twenty, each signed. The fragrance compositions are unisex, built with high-quality ingredients in collaboration with skilled perfumers, and conceived to complement rather than compete with the expressive power of the flacons. Christine and Niclas describe their quest as challenging both the ancient art of perfume-making and the traditional craft of glass-blowing—a genuinely dual ambition that separates AGONIST from houses that treat their bottle as packaging rather than art. The brand is distributed selectively through boutiques aligned with its intersection of fashion, contemporary art, and fragrance. In 2021, the Lydeens founded a second brand, CRA-YON, with a more playful and contemporary visual identity, allowing AGONIST to maintain its position as the rarefied elder sibling: collectible, sculptural, and firmly positioned for the collector who regards the shelf as a gallery.
