Banana Republic
Modern American style, bottled.
Banana Republic was founded in 1978 by Mel and Patricia Ziegler in Mill Valley, California, as a quirky catalog retailer of safari- and travel-inspired clothing, with hand-illustrated catalogs and surplus military gear repackaged for an aspirational reader. Acquired by Gap Inc. in 1983, the brand was steadily reworked through the 1990s into a contemporary American dress-and-casual label aimed at the urban professional market. Fragrance entered the picture in 1995 and has remained a steady part of the assortment, originally produced under license and now mostly handled through Inter Parfums. The compositions track the brand's neutral-luxury aesthetic: clean woods, soft leathers, warm florals and citrus-amber structures with names that evoke travel and wardrobe staples. The house is headquartered in San Francisco and remains a wholly-owned division of Gap Inc., distributed through its own stores and selected fragrance retailers worldwide.
DNA over time
Each column is an era. Each colored band shows that family’s share of accord weight across every perfume the house released in that window. Bigger band = the house leaned harder on that family.
