Burberry
Burberry was founded in Basingstoke in 1856 by Thomas Burberry, a draper who invented gabardine — a breathable, weatherproof woven fabric that would become the foundation of both the brand's trench coat and its global identity. The fragrance line, launched in the late 1970s and expanded significantly under licence with Coty, has become one of the most commercially successful in British luxury perfumery. Burberry fragrances draw heavily on the brand's British countryside aesthetic: the classic Burberry for Women (1995) and the newer Her and His lines centre on naturalistic ingredients — violets, lavender, cedar — set against soft musks. The Private Collection and Bespoke lines offer a more elevated tier, while the mainline delivers consistent, broadly appealing prestige scents.
DNA over time
Each column is an era. Each colored band shows that family’s share of accord weight across every perfume the house released in that window. Bigger band = the house leaned harder on that family.
