Joop!
1980s German designer perfume, still trading on Joop! Homme
Joop! is a German fashion-and-fragrance label founded by designer Wolfgang Joop in Hamburg in 1981. The clothing line was acquired and largely dismantled in the 2000s, but the perfume business — long licensed to Lancaster and now part of the Coty portfolio — has remained a steady presence in the European designer market. Joop! Homme, released in 1989, is the house's defining scent: a sweet, powdery oriental built on heliotrope, vanilla, cinnamon, and tonka, controversial in its day for its frank femininity on a men's launch and still in continuous production. The pink magenta bottle is one of the era's most recognisable. Later pillars such as All About Eve and the various flankers have not eclipsed the original. The house sits firmly in mid-tier accessible designer territory and is best understood as an artefact of 1980s European fragrance.
